Find spots of attributed Attic vases
For selected vase painters listed in Beazley’s Attic Black-Figure Vase Painters and Attic Red-Figure Vase Painters (second edition), Holy Cross archaeology students have tabulated the distribution of different shapes by find spot. Queries of this data set can be viewed as tables in Web pages, and as KML files that can be mapped using Google Earth or other GIS software.
There are many kinds of bias in this selection — it includes only Attic Black- and Red-figured pottery, it includes only pottery that Beazley attributed to a specific hand, and at present it includes only selections from Beazley’s lists. Even with these limitations, however, the data set shows interesting differences in the distribution of pottery over time, and by shape.
